If you are a macro diver, you will fall in love with Mabul Island because it has 12 diving sites that are unique in their own ways. Mabul is recognized as the world’s “muck diving Mecca” for good reason. The waters of Mabul Island are rich with nutrients hence, making it a good habitat for marine life.
Diving in Mabul is suited for all levels of divers especially beginner divers as dive sites are mostly shallows while mild current allows for easy drift dives. The depth of the dive sites is from five to 40 meters deep with visibility of up to 20 meters. This also makes it easier for divers to observe macro marine life and for those who are doing underwater photography because the surface conditions are calm and the currents are gentle.

If you are a photographer and would like to take photos of macro or critter photography, this is the recommended dive site for you. The depth of this site is only 5-10 metres deep however the visibility is pretty poor. You will need a divemaster with excellent eyesight to assist you around. Be rewarded with the views of fascinating nudibranchs, ghost pipe-fish, mandarin-fish and scorpion-fish, as well as camouflaged frog and crocodile fish, and lots of fancy cuttlefish.
This namesake dive site is popular for its garden eels sighting rising out of the seabed. Besides just eels, this dive site is also the home to multi-hued Frogfish, Giant Mantis Shrimp, Blue Ribbon Eels, Batfish, Blue-ringed Octopus, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and more. Also another great spot for underwater photography. With its depth of 5-25 meters deep, the visibility of this dive site is better and the currents are light.
On the sandy bottom and slopes, make sure your eyes are focused and sharp because you would get to see many critters. This is the best dive site for macro diving. Expect to see Seahorses, Crocodilefish, Ghost Pipefish, Snake Eels and a host of other macro critters. This dive site is also more suited to advanced level divers.
Undeniably the best dive site of Mabul island and with its name being the Lobster wall, you are definitely going to see lobsters hiding in the cracks of the wall. Alongside the lobsters, you’ll also see stonefish, triggerfish, ghost pipefish, clownfish, seahorses and more. The Lobster Wall is the deepest dive site of Mabul as it is 25-40 meters of depth. The dive here would be deep, wall and reef.
Be in awe when you dive in the Ribbon Valley as this dive site if filled with amazing biodiversity. Most likely named after the Ribbon Eel, Ribbon Valley is not short of colourful corals and marine creatures as well. This dive site is more of a scenic natural reef with lots of nooks and crannies. The depth is only 5-18 meters deep and it’s quite a relaxing dive here as you might get to swim with giant turtles. Also, Ribbon Valley is actually divided into three namely Ribbon Valley 1, 2 and 3. Take a pick or even just dive in all 3 of them.
